bartholomeus, if you are in Miami I would STRONGLY encourage you to NOT get a Bel 980 or any of the earlier Vector series. They are EXTREMELY susceptible to heat, and won't work when hot.

The X50 is also prone to heat, but it is not black, so it tends to not get as hot. I have owned all three of these (Bel 980, Pro 78, and X50).

You need to figure what your normal threat is. Where I live it's 75-80% K band, so the X50 is better for me. If your main threat is Ka band I would say buy the Pro 78, it is just about equal, and is built like a tank inside. Here's a link to a private review of the Pro 78 complete with pictures of the inside of the unit (GOLD plated contacts!!!):

I have both the X50 and Whistler XTR-690 (same platform as the Pro 78), and I have noticed that the X50 gets better range on K band.

I'm not sure on KA band but I would guess the X50 edges the XTR-690 just slightly.

My dad is currently using the XTR-690 and loves it tho!

Yes, the X50 is very good on K-band. My Pro-78 does well with it too, but I don't like that it confuses X and K.

just received my pro-78 yesterday, and i love it. Looks pretty sleek plus there's a HUGE difference between pro 78 and a cobra. Way more features, i drove with it only once but i noticed its picking up the k-doors at a reasonable range ( had it on highway to test). Seemed to pick up a cop that was in front of me about half a mile away on ka. Pretty nice overall. I'll post a little more as i drive more.

Congrats. Was the cop in front of you going the same direction as you?

Yes, the POP function makes it false a LOT. Like unbearably much.

However, mine did alert to POP one time with POP off. Has to be just the right parameters, but it will give you a regular K-band alert if it is.

I have heard very good things about the Pro-78 and is a very good bang for the buck. I have also heard the Bel 980/985 is a very sweet unit if you can snag it for a low price. I not a huge fan of the Escorts (April was very good though...j/k). Take a look on craigslist and you can find some sweet deals.
