Default Bel 955 or Pro 78 Radar Detector ??

I had been thinking of buying a Pro 78 but, according to Guys of Lidar most recent reviews, the Bel 955 is significantly more sensitive. I have read more negative feedback from 955 users than from Pro 78 users but there are just too many Bel users who are pleased with their RDs and the difference in sensitivity as measured by GOL is significant.

Anyone have experience with both or their brethren?

Whichever I buy will be from Amazon (not an Amazon vendor) and I have confirmed that Amazon is an authorized dealer for both.

The Pro 78 that the GOL tested was not Rev C, which gives a significant (IMO) boost on KA sensitivity and a smaller boost on K sensitivity when POP is turned off.

I would go with the Pro78 or XTR-690 (I like the compass), it has a 3 year warranty and the best customer service I have ever experienced.

If you have a problem, post it up on radardetector.net and Whistlers engineering Mike B. responds very promptly to you and takes care of it. Whether that means sending it to him PERSONALLY to have him tune it up or just explaining features.

I like what the XTR-690 offers but im still wiling to bet the 955 is better in over all detection.

I’m honestly thinking of getting a XTR-690, but if i didn’t have a 9500I or any other RD it would certainly be a 955.

Silverstreak is right -- the Pro-78/XTR-690 GOL (who I don't trust anyway) tested was not Rev C. I run a Pro-78 with Rev C and I love it. They're more reliable than Bels, customer service is better, warranty is longer, and you get more features. However, you might want to wait and get the XTR-695 when it comes out. Even MORE features.

The 955 is a tad more sensitive, but that doesn't always translate to real world improved performance.

Default Re: Bel 955 or Pro 78 Radar Detector ??

After considering the previous comments and reading reviews from all possible sources, I decided on the Pro 78 over the Bel 955 and ordered it from Amazon today.

I like the appearance of the the Bel and I expect it would provide radar/laser warnings a little earlier than the Pro 78 but I decided on the Pro 78 for the following reasons:
1. The Pro 78 was $128 and includes a 3-year warranty, a hardwire kit and a non-slip pad for the dash. I plan to use the non-slip pad as a mount below my windshield wipers so as not to advertise the RD. The Bel 955 would have been $165 plus $10 for the hardwire kit, only has a 1 year warranty, and I would have had to buy a non-slip pad to mount it on.
2. There are many Pro 78 owners who report excellent results with this RD and it should suit my needs.
3. There are many, many reports of happy Bel owners, however, there are many reports of Bel detectors having problems including: frequent false alerts, dead out of the box, frequent calibration req’d and service req’d messages, and units requiring service after being left in the sun for long periods of time.

Thank you for your input. I’m looking forward to trying out the RD when it arrives in the next week.

Yes, the Pro-78 can turn off any band. But X band is automatically turned off in City 1 mode. Or you can turn it off manually.

Let us know how you like it nipper. I love mine!
