Indeed, I am very sorry to hear that.

I went with the Cheetah C100 dash mount and I am pretty happy with it. Works great as a speedometer (mine is broken) and sits right on my steering column. I leave it mounted permanently (with velcro) and just cover it up with a piece of black cloth when I'm out of the truck. I don't have red light cameras in my area, so I haven't gotten an alert yet. But early next year I'll be driving through Albuquerque and they have them there. Updates have been excellent and timely and the updates have included fixes for complaints people have voiced. One of them was the 24 hour clock. This didn't really bother me much, but it was switched over to a 12 hour clock. The clock appears when you are going under 9 MPH. Unfortunately, the conversion wasn't 100% successful. At noon and midnight the clock reads 0.00. So it goes into 24 hour mode at those times. Cheetah reps have promised that the next update will fix that.
The other problem is even less important...the Cheetah emblem on top of the C100 is peeling off. Evidently Cheetah used some really crappy glue to hold it on, and heat is having a negative effect on it. No big deal. I'll just use auto trim cement when it finally peels off.
The C100 becomes even more effective when you hook a radar detector into it. You can adjust it so that it disables any alerts at whatever speed you choose. So if you are in town and there are tons of door openers or alarm systems, and you are driving at or under the speed setting you put on the C100, you don't get the detections that everyone gripes about. So all those "lockout detectors" are unnecessary with a C100. Makes even the V1 bearable around town.

I'm honestly hoping that what navalert posted on the RD.net Forums, about their company making a "comeback, with a vengeance," will actually be true.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a Cheetah user (GPS-Mirror), and Cheetah/Cheetah-USA's got me so sold on their customer-service that I more than likely won't ever use anything else.

But as a true-independent hobbyist and end-consumer, I'm always appreciative of having more than one choice available, both for myself as well as for my fellow end-consumers. Furthermore, I've always believed that healthy competition leads to not only prices that are more consumer-friendly, but also spurs continued product development and improvement.

Hopefully, Cheetah's entry into this market, with the stand-alone C100, has served to force NavAlert back on the right track, and hopefully will spur them to make both more frequent as well as more timely database updates (and offer them on their promised time-scales to their end-users), as well as will again see a reversion to their old level of customer interaction and support, which sadly all but disappeared during those few dark months earlier this year.

I go by the old saying, "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me". Navalert had terrible customer service and a really bad attitude. I don't need either of those. Cheetah has been very helpful and their reps don't have their nose stuck way up in the air. They are just regular folks like us. Besides all that, there just aren't enough features on the Navalert to draw me back.
