A lot will depend on a couple of key factors:

1. We're trying to make that Disney World vacation happen in October. If it does, I'll get used snow tires at best. If not, we'll have the $$ saved for rims and nice snow tires.

2. Job. I am actively job searching right now, and have already received a call from Boeing. We would be moving to St Louis this year, and if so, that'll make winter tires a bit more of a necessity. We have dry winters up here. There -- not so much.

Second - "used" winters.....can you cross-shop (tire sizing) for ones in the Subaru community? We've got a lot of people who really like winters, and typically see between 205/55/17, 215/50/17, 225/45/17, to 225/40/18 sizing.

But aside from treadwear/cost-effectiveness, I guess the other reason why I'd shy away from this would be "years"/cost-effectiveness. For a guy like me, for example, I may still have plenty of tread on the tires, as I don't drive that much, but the tires will have gone through three, or even four seasons' worth of use....and the compound may be "shot" by then....

Thanks. Have one nibble of interest already, but it's rotating shift work and I don't know that I'd move to St Louis for THAT.

I think I can get 17s on over my brakes, but I'd have to buy rims for that. and I believe that last size is what I have on my car now.

Yeah, that's a given. I'd have to seriously look at them to be sure they were worth any money. They'd be a temporary solution anyway, just to get me through our tighter budgeting times.

I'd like to get snows on the wife's CX-9 too. It would be a BEAST in the snow with winter tires on. But that's a LOT of $$.
