| Pros Great features for the price, good range, VG-2 cloak is a big plus. Cons A lot of false alerts even with city mode on. The Bottom Line The Whistler 1732DE is a great all around detector for the price. It works better than some of the $100 dollar detectors that are out there. Full Review When the box says "Great features for the price!" It isn't kidding. You can buy this detector in Wal-Mart for about 40 dollars or you could even pay less than $30 online if you look in the right places. With the Whistler 1732DE you get get a lot of features.(They are listed on this site.) Whistler DE-1732 Radar Detector . Sometimes we make minor mistakes, we are driving our cars, listening to our music, not really watching for cops or our speed. We are just cruising. We don't realize that we are going 10 over.(Since I drive a Nissan Maxima this is easy for me to do.) This is where the Whistler 1732DE comes in. This situation has happened to me a few times. My radar detector will signal that there is a cop ahead, I'll slow down to the speed limit. And about 10 seconds later I will see the police cruiser sitting in the median on the road. This Whistler detector has a good range. It will alert you in plenty of time to slow down to the speed limit if you are going about 10 over. This detector is a good one to have if you are just going a little over the speed limit. If you are a real leadfoot and like to go 15+ over the speed limit, you may want to get a more effective detector like the Valentine one, but even that would not save you. I have found that the VG-2 cloaking is very effective. I was driving in Gulf Breeze Alabama without my VG-2 cloaking on, an unmarked car was behind me. My radar was going crazy, and then the laser signal would keep going off. It was like the cop was constantly hitting me with laser. It was quite annoying. I hit the VG-2 cloaking button. Then the VG-2 Alert immediatly sounded and it cloaked. A few seconds later the cop went around me. Maybe he thought I unplugged it. The radar came back on. So I kept driving down the road en route to Florida. My VG-2 sounds again, so I slow down from going 5 over to the speed limit. My radar cloaks, I look to my right and I see the same officer sitting on the side of the road. Mind you this was at about 10 pm at night. So the road was pretty deserted. I think that he was there because he thought I turned off my radar detector. So I think that the VG-2 cloaking is a great feature to have. I am satisfied with my detector. It has saved me more money than I spent on it by more than 3 fold. I recommend this product. More... Last edited by RadarReviews_Net; 05-23-2008 at 12:28 AM. | ||||||||

Honestly, I haven't seen many people using this detector, most people use Cobras around here but Cobras get decent X and K band detection and the Ka band detection is just unpredictable. I was incorrect on one point when I wrote this review being a radar detector noob. A detector like the V1 can give you more than a 1 mile save. You won't ever get that kind of save with this detector, however, this detector will give you enough warning to slow down in time if they are running constant-on radar. There is another type of radar that is known as POP or Instant-On. Be advised that this radar does not offer protection from POP. However, POP can be easily fought in courts as it is very inaccurate. Also, most people with detectors that can pick up POP drive with the POP mode on off in the city because it will greatly increase the amount of false alerts. At the time I wrote the review I was unaware that the situtation with the officer that was running VG-2 was actually a rare occurance. Officers don't use VG-2 a lot anymore because virtually any detector is immune to VG-2 except for the old ones. Now they use mostly Spectre III and IV. The only 3 detectors that are immune to this is the Belltronics STI Driver, Belltronics STI-R and the Escort 9500ci are undetectable by the Spectre III and IV. However, this isn't that big of a deal unlesss you are driving in VA. Yes, this is a great detector for the price. If you want to spend less than 50 dollars on a detector this is the one to get. I've had a few saves with it and am overall very happy with it. But if you are looking for something that gives a better range than a few hundred feet, I would look into the Whistler Pro-78. That is a great detector for the price. In general, stay away from Cobras. Some of them have acceptable detection but when you factor in the price for those Cobra detectors you will find that you can get the same or better detection for a lower price from other brands. I hope I that what I said is helpful to you. Last edited by RadarReviews_Net; 06-02-2008 at 10:28 PM. | |||||||||
