Laser Mask Upgrades,

LaserMask USA is offering free upgrades to any of their laser units that becomes out of date due to a new laser gun being brought out that it cant detect.

The only thing I don't like about the Laser Mask's upgrade path is - and this is current understanding, according to mhardy on RD.net - that the heads will have to be swapped out, too.

That's going to be labor intensive....

I know that the XR upgrade on the LI also entailed this particular need, but that's, so far, been a one-time need.

With the Laser Mask, my hope is that they will eventually be able to implement a technical setup where only the control-box needs to be swapped-out/updated, leaving heads in-situ, or, alternatively, come up with a method by which the heads can *easily* be swapped out, yet retain sufficient mounting stability as well as weathersealing at the (likely scenario) more proximal (to the head itself) connector.

That is correct. It is the heads that have to be upgraded as they are what hold the software. The control box has a cpu in it but it is used to sinc all the heads together. But for free it isn't a bad deal.

I said this on RD.net, and I want to be sure to put it here, too, so that others do not take my comments the wrong way.....

Please don't see my post as being a complaint - it's more a lament, and also a hope to spur further development of the Mask so as to be of more benefit to the end user (more user-friendly), which, in-turn, will drive sales.

I do think that the LaserMask appeals to those with more budgetary limitations - and that those individuals are also more likely to be DIYers, and thus, hopefully, may not see this labor point as being too, too bad.

I know that on my vehicle, since I'm a DIYer, I can literally rip off a head in a matter of minutes, with minimal fuss. But for those who pay for professional installation....that's going to add up.

It would be something for the engineering team to work towards.
