Default Passport X50 red to blue...

Hello, I was just wondering if anybody had ever taken their X50 apart and noticed how integrated the LED display was... I bought a red one craving a blue, but there were no blue displays within 500 miles... So, if I bought a cheap, broken blue one from eBay, would it be possible to swap???

Red face Re: Passport X50 red to blue...

The best person to address this would probably be MEM-TEK. Maybe send him a PM, but for the X50 I don't think there are any differences other than the color of LED's used. On the 9500ci I think there was a thread stating that it was not such a straight forward swamp, but for the X50 I don't see any reason why you couldn't do what you want. I don't have a X50 in front of me so unfortunately I can't check further on this, but others here should be able to give you a more definitive answer. I'd be surprised if you couldn't do it though.

Its not that easy, no simple ribbon connection. I also believe the Blue display requires a small amount of additional power over the red.

Hmm, that's understandable... I was just curious... And a little upset about my red, but it still does the exact same job... Outside opinions were saying it wouldn't make a difference, but I guess that's because they don't look at it everyday like I do...

Cool Re: Passport X50 red to blue...

I don't even know why they make them in red, aside of the now defunct pontiac, no one has red dashboard lights so these days red looks so out of place inside a car. It's the number one thing that I never liked about my RX65. Whistler has the best display set-up. You can change the display color to match pretty much any car. Really wish Bel/Escort would adapt this.

The only reasonably priced displays when RD's first started and even 5 yrs ago were RED.

Wink Re: Passport X50 red to blue...

Yes I know but I'm saying there is no practical reason for it, unless you want to consider they were probably cheaper to produce (for the manufacture). When you get into the more modern higher priced detectors then people should be able to decide for themselves how it matches their car. Besides, "reasonably priced" is subjective

Yes, you can do it. I have taken the displays off my SRX and 9500ci.

You will need to find a blue case for it's lens, and it would help if you can the display off that too. Depending on how old the 8500 is, you may be able to buy the exact display from digikey.
