Default confused about auto volume Escort Passport Radar Detector

Hi this is my first post here.I just bought a escort 9500i and dont understand the manual instructions about the auto volume feature. The manual says that if this feature is set to off(default setting)then the volume will adjust automaticly and if its set to on it is adjusted manually. Is this a typo? or am I to understand in order to use a feature it should be in the off setting?

This is what the manual says (factory default is on):

AutoVolume
aVol ON (AutoVolume on)
In this setting, PASSPORT’S built-in
microphone listens to the ambient noise in
the vehicle and increases the audio in noisy
conditions (e.g. loud music, excessive
wind noise, etc.). (factory default)

aVol OFF (AutoVolume off)
In this setting, the volume level will not
increase automatically.

Keep in mind its best in a very quiet car and the volume should be kept at mid level. If the volume is up all the way it will still be up all the way with auto volume on.

And keep in mind that Auto Volume doesn't seem to work very well. Thus I recommend keeping this particular feature turned off.

I've got a decently quiet (i.e. insulated) car, but I've got quite a bit of "plumbing work" done to her, too (both pre- and post-turbo piping changes), as well as like to cruise with all 4 windows, plus the moonroof, open (although I tend to keep the radio off).

I've got my detector volume set to precisely one-half range, and honestly, for me and my typical usage, AutoVolume works great.

Intrusion is minimal and very bearable (until AutoMute kicks in) for my primary adult passengers, and when I'm alone, driving more aggressively and with the windows down, the boost in volume up to full makes for unmistakable warning tones even at above-legal highway speeds.

However, I do think that this is highly vehicle and user-setup (including vehicle entertainment system settings) dependent. What works well for me, might not for you.
