Default RD and heat

I have always said it doesnt matter if you leave it mounted all the time. Well today I took the wife on some errands. As I was waiting on her to return I was playing with my gadgets. I wondered why I didnt receive any X band warning on the way to the clinic. I just got my stealth mounted concealed display in a cpl of days ago so I have had X on to see it the new mute button works ok.
I realized on the way I didnt get any alerts, so I was looking at the X50 blue and realized it said H ..... It was frozen on that. I tried FULL reset and it stuck on BLUE. I took it down and put in front of the AC for 4 or 5 min. it was only 90 outside today. I left if laying till I got home then hooked it back up and it worked fine.
It was hot when I took it down, but I have lived in Okla for years with no problems. I have always left mine up 24-7. Its a 4 year old Rev 5, X50 blue.
Guess I will send it in for a check up. Its a first for me to have any trouble with any X50 and I have owned a few of them.

I had a 8500 non x50 and did the same as you. after about 4 years i would get a service required message and it was directly related to heat (never did it in winter) however i attribute it to old age and becoming more sensitive to heat rather than because i left it up all the time.

Yikes I would never leave my X50 up in 90 degree weather if I was leaving the car for more than 5 min.

Just asking for trouble IMHO

My thought with heat & RD's is they are designed to handle it, and inherently are hot. Just like any electronic item, it will produce heat and the sun & heat in your car wont bother it unless it gets out of tune and becomes more sensitive to heat. IMO

You would be how surprised it can get in a car, when it is 90+ degrees outside. In the summer I bring my radar inside in the winter...well what you call a winter in texas...i leave it in the car...radar detector is always down though when parked for theft and heat reasons.

I feel like if you sold me something with suction cups on it and directions telling me to stick it on my windshield, you should design it with that in mind.

I called Escort today and told them the problem. The lady I spoke with said if it reset ok not to worry about it unless I have any service messages. She said for 60 dollars they would make it like new. I told her it was Rev 5 and asked if it would still be that when I got it back. She said they would upgrade the firmware but I would not be able to tell any difference in range.

But lets face it over time heat is going to have a negative affect on any electronics. Looks like to me if your not replacing the board you are not really fixing the problem. But what the hell do I know. Decisions, decisions.

Is it time for a new RD?

I would try to see if they will sell you a new X50 or 9500I and fix/make like new your Rev5 for free.

Valentine says their device is designed to operate in extreme heat. In fact the units case temperature is scalding even when it runs on a cool overcast day. During the summer when I go to San Antonio I can't even tough the thing without a towell. It's too hot to touch.

However, Valentine also recommends not leaving in extreme cold. Certainly not below freezing.
