I found where the CSPD moved the speed trailer today, so when I had a moment, I made two runs against it. They had placed it in a residential neighborhood, at the top of a hill and JUST around a slight curve.
So I started my northbound run toward it with the Pro-78 on and in CITY 1 mode. As soon as I was turned in the general direction of the radar, I got a K-Band alert at 2 bars. It ramped up nicely until I passed the trailer.
All total, about .3 miles detection range with a hill and a slight curve in there. The trailer was NOT in sight when I picked it up. In fact, it isn't in sight until about .1 miles away. (So in the attached map, the road slants UP to the intersection, then it's flat to the other side, then up again to the trailer.)
THen I turned around and made a second run, this time with my old Beltronics 715i on and the 78 off. Got to the .3 range. Nothing. Crossed an intersection at .2 miles, still nothing. I didn't get an alert until I was at .07 miles from the sign and it was JUST coming into view.
WIth the Pro-78 -- PLENTY of time to slow down. With the 715 i -- I'd have been NAILED dead to rights.
Oh, and on a not-so-comforting note, the speed trailer was registering something going 49 in the 25 zone when I was parked and looking at it. But there wasn't a car in sight. I strongly suspect it was tracking debris in the strong wind we were having at the time -- so that should lower your faith in radar speed measurement.
