No please don't do that. The 3M tape should go directly on the plate. The tape isn't perfectly clear, so if you allow space between the tape the numbers will start to get blurry. Essentially the 3M clear duct tape is much like the Ontrack laser shield. You must get the shield/tape as close to the numbers as possible in order to elude suspicion.
