As for looks, I still think it looks better than an STI or 8500 because its not so long. When you have a V1 mounted high and sitting level it looks sexy as hell.
Programming is actually very simple despite the fact that newbies always whine about this.
If you have trouble telling the alerts apart then you need more experience with the V1. Once you use it for awhile you never even need to look at the band id because the tones are unmistakably unique (ka and k might sound sorta similar but laser is definitely its own)
The only thing it probably needs is a frequency display.

Agreed. this conversation is a dead bat... probably one of the reasons I havent been on a forum in about 2 years +.....
Frequecy displays are not accurate at all and are not really usefull... I have had one... and yeah I knew theres a false from some of the alearts... but not all... that some is not worth the info overload... which Mike states on the web site!
