I've got a simple 1000 channel digital scanner. It mostly helps me navigate accidents. I can't tell you how many times it has helped me secure an alternative route before the local radio station finished they're torso jokes and gets on to traffic. It's also got "signal stalker" which when selected allows me to monitor any exchanges in a patrol car within 1000 ft. I use that sitting at lights when there's a LEO in the pack. I've never had my tag run yet but I've overheard many others.

Also, the scanner can alert you to any reports of reckless or speeding drivers on a given interstate. Now that cell phones are everywhere it's not uncommon to hear several reports of speeding drivers on one evening commute called in by other drivers. Occasionally a call in will even have a license number on it. That's where an in car cell phone jammer comes in handy. At least then they have to write it down.
